Designed for research labs

The existence of sufficiently large high quality collections of reference spectra is an urgent demand of ongoing high throughput glycomics projects. The existence of an accepted depository for glyco-related spectroscopic data will guarantee that the loss of primary data can be considerably reduced.

This design study will concentrate on the development on databases for

primary carbohydrate structures and their occurrence in Nature as well as on databases for MS- and NMR-spectra and HPLC profiles.

To ensure the success of EUROCarbDB, the coordinator as well as the steering committee will follow closely the development of other glycomics database initiatives, in particular the two large glycomics projects in USA and Japan. The already existing personal interlocking of the EUROCarbDB participants (ICL, DKFZ) with the US consortium will guarantee that each project can concentrate on its own merits and specialities and maximal synergetic effects will result.

The same is true for the Japanese initiative where EUROCarbDB participants (ICL, DKFZ) are members of the advisory board. The coordinator and steering committee of EUROCarbDB will also try to come into contact with new initiatives at the earliest possible stage to avoid redundant work and to point out the standards for data representation and exchange formats developed by this consortium.

Likely expansions of EUROCarbDB at a later stage  will be the addition of experimental data like 3D-structures derived from X-ray studies, binding characteristics of carbohydrates to protein using NMR, Higher order NMR spectra (2D, 3D-spectra), Carbohydrate Microarrays, Microcalorimetry, Surface Plasmon Resonance or collections of methods for chemical, combinatorial, chemo-enzymatic and large scale synthesis of glyco-probes.

Moreover, it will advance the development of algorithms, which enable a rapid and reliable automatic  interpretation of mass spectrometry (MS) and HPLC data and nuclear magnetic resonance  (NMR) spectra.
